KeyStage 3 (Ages 11-14, Year Group 7 - 9)

At this level we provide a Personal Learning Programme that supports your child’s needs, the National Curriculum and, if required, prepares the student for the KS3 SAT.

English Topics Covered

Reading (En 3)

  • Comprehension – Understanding more complex texts. Supporting study of older texts i.e. Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’.
  • Understanding the writer’s craft the techniques used in fiction and non-fiction texts – similes, onomatopoeia, assonance, emotive language, rhetorical questions, repetition etc.
  • Comparing texts
  • Media Texts – Analysing visual differences of layout, structure and language between media-based texts (newspaper/ magazine articles).

Writing (En 3)

  • Composition – Extensive use of grammar and application of style and form according to type of text. Understanding target audience, different texts and their effects
  • Formal and Informal Writing – Distinguishing different types of essay writing i.e. Descriptive, Factual, Controversial, Imaginative, Report, Article, Review and Letter Writing.
  • Punctuation and Spelling
  • Standard English and Language Structure – Grammar, Vocabulary and Spelling.
