English Tuition in Darlington

Expert, personalised English tuition for primary and secondary students – from Year 3 through to GCSE.

What We Cover

Our English tuition is tailored to each student's individual needs and follows the National Curriculum for Years 3 to 11. Whether your child needs help building foundational reading and writing skills or is preparing for SATs and GCSE exams, we create an individual and personalised learning plan that works for them.

  • Reading comprehension — understanding and analysing fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Creative and descriptive writing — developing voice, structure and technique
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling — essential for SATs and GCSE marks
  • Poetry analysis and language techniques
  • Essay writing and exam technique
  • KS2 SATs preparation for Year 6 students
  • GCSE English Language and Literature preparation (Years 10 to 11)

How Sessions Work

Each session lasts one hour. We build a personalised learning plan around the areas your child finds most challenging, noting new areas to work on together as we get to know them better. At the start of every session we also ask whether there is anything they have been learning at school that they would like more support with. Sessions involve a mixture of reading activities, written tasks and targeted exercises, adapted as your child progresses.

There are up to 3 students per session and every child works on their own individual and personalised learning plan with focused support from our teachers throughout.

Exam Preparation

For Year 6 students, we focus on the reading paper and grammar, punctuation and spelling. The main priority for all GCSE students is to pass their English Language exam. Their teacher will also work on English Literature, but only if the student is likely to pass English Language. We work through exam questions, practise timed responses and develop the analytical skills examiners reward. We know the mark schemes and grade descriptors and understand what it takes to move students up the bands.

Pass Marks and Grades for SATs and GCSEs

Understanding how your child is assessed can help you make sense of their progress and targets.

KS2 SATs (Year 6) — Students receive a standardised score. A score of 100 or above is a pass (meeting the expected standard). A score of 110 or above indicates greater depth. Scores below 100 mean a child has not yet met the expected standard for their age.

GCSE (Year 11) — GCSE grades run from 1 (lowest) to 9 (highest). A grade 4 is a standard pass. Students who do not achieve at least a grade 4 in English Language will need to resit the following year. A grade 5 is considered a strong pass and is required for many college courses and apprenticeships.

Who Can Benefit?

English tuition helps students who are falling behind, those working at the expected level who want to push further and high-achieving students aiming for top grades. We work with students from Year 3 through to Year 11, as well as students resitting their GCSE English.
